The Difference Between CCS and CCLI

August 19, 2015

Churches and ministries have many options with blanket licensing solutions for use of copyrighted materials. Like CCS, several companies have developed one-stop licenses that greatly simplify the copyright clearance process.

One of the most common questions that comes up when searching for the proper licensing for churches is the confusion between Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI ) and Christian Copyright Solutions (CCS).  Both companies have similar names and both companies were founded to serve the church in the area of copyright needs.  However, each company primarily focuses on a different area of copyright need.

It’s important to note that there are six distinct exclusive rights that a song owner has: ReproductionPerformance, Distribution, Public Display, Digital Recording Performance and Making Derivative Works. CCS’s blanket licenses, PERFORMmusic License and WORSHIPcast, are Performance licenses for ONSITE (in your facilities) and ONLINE (streaming on your website). Most of the other church blanket license cover Reproduction or Copying rights.
